A Northern Territory man who allegedly used Australia Post to import cannabis into the Top End has been charged with drug trafficking.

The 31-year-old received 46kgs of cannabis buds in vacuum-packed bags in three parcels, federal police say.

Officers intercepted the packages during a nationwide investigation into criminal networks using the postal system to traffic illicit drugs.

They arrested the man as he collected the parcels in Darwin and charged him with six counts of supplying and possessing a commercial quantity of dangerous drugs.

Detectives allegedly later found methamphetamine, vials of steroids, drug utensils and $13,200 in cash at the man’s home.

Acting Superintendent Stephen Jay said criminals had adapted to COVID-19 border restrictions.

“Organised crime are looking for ways to circumnavigate travel restrictions and we have stayed a step ahead to protect the community,” he said.

The man was refused bail and is scheduled to face the Darwin Local Court on Friday.
