A driver who allegedly struck a five-year-old boy at a Darwin pedestrian crossing and fled the scene has handed himself in to police

The child suffered two broken legs and a fractured arm when struck by a car near a playground on Monday afternoon.

He remains in Royal Darwin Hospital in a stable condition.

Police launched an appeal for the driver to come forward and a 22-year-old man handed himself in on Thursday afternoon.

Detective Senior Constable Rhys Studders said investigators received numerous tips from the public.

“Had this man not handed himself in, it really was only a matter of time before we were knocking on his door,” he said.

The man was charged with hit-and-run causing serious harm and failing to report a crash.

He appeared in Darwin Local Court and was granted bail on Friday.

His case was adjourned until October 16.
