Western Australia’s newest airline has taken to the skies offering regional passenger flights that will link the vast Mid West, Pilbara and Kimberley regions.

Nexus Airlines took off on Monday with the inaugural flight on the new Geraldton-Karratha-Port Hedland-Broome route.

Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said the scheduled service would boost tourism and business in regional WA.

It also means residents in the north of the state can fly direct between regional centres, instead of having to travel south through Perth.

“Today’s first flight on the expanded Inter-Regional Flight Network by Nexus Airlines marks a historic moment for aviation services in WA,” Ms Saffioti said.

The WA government has promised $4.05 million over four years to support the route and allow the airline to invest in higher-capacity 76-seat aircraft, which will reduce airfares and increase passenger comfort.

Nexus Airlines has exclusive rights to operate the inter-regional Flight route until June 2027.

Nexus Airlines’ Geraldton-Perth flights start next Monday, with Geraldton residents able to access capped airfares on the route through the Regional Airfare Zone Cap scheme.

The airline’s website said it was backed by Kununurra-based Aviair Pty Ltd.

It operates a passenger flight service between Karratha, Newman, Port Hedland, Broome and Derby using small planes.

Aviair also offers scheduled flights in the East Kimberley, from Kununurra to Halls Creek, Balgo and Kalumburu.

Nexus also offers flights between Broome, Kununurra and Darwin.
