Warnings to flee for two WA bushfires

A series of bushfires have broken out in Western Australia’s south, forcing residents to evacuate.

January 10, 2023

Residents in two Western Australian regions have been told to evacuate as separate bushfires bear down on homes.

The WA Department of Fire and Emergency Services warned one fire was burning east of Donnybrook, in the state’s southwest.

Residents were told they were in danger and needed to act immediately to survive as there was a threat to lives and homes.

A bushfire emergency warning has been issued for people in parts of Beelerup, Brookhampton and Charley Creek.

An evacuation centre has opened at Donnybrook Recreation Centre.

Meanwhile, a second blaze continues to threaten homes about 10km southeast of Bridgetown in the rural areas of Sunnyside, Kingston and Yornup.

A bushfire emergency warning is in place for people east of the South Western Highway.

Authorities have urged residents to evacuate to a safe area or find shelter.

The fire started near the intersection of Gomm Lane and Kingston Roads on Sunnyside, in the state’s heavily wooded southwest.

Residents in both areas are advised to leave if the way is clear or find a place to shelter in their homes.

An earlier blaze threatening homes near the tiny Wheatbelt town of Kununoppin, north of Merredin, has been contained.
