A bushfire emergency warning for hundreds of residents in the Perth suburb of Port Kennedy has been downgraded to watch and act.

A bushfire emergency warning for hundreds of residents in a Perth suburb has been downgraded to watch and act.

The blaze continues to burn in Port Kennedy in a large area of coastal bushland adjoining hundreds of homes and dozens of commercial properties.

Authorities warning conditions are changing and a possible threat to lives and homes remains.

There is a lot of smoke in the area, the Western Australian Department of Fire and Emergency Services warning said.

Residents have been told to stay alert and have a plan to leave or find shelter.

The blaze that started on Thursday morning near the intersection of Bakewell Drive and Paxton Way has burned through more than 10 hectares.

More than 50 firefighters remain at the sceneĀ strengthening containment lines and back burning unburnt pockets of scrub.

The order is in place for people bound by Sevilla Terrace, San Sebastian Boulevard, Warnbro Sound Avenue and Bakewell Drive.

A number of roads in the area remain closed, including Bakewell Drive, between Port Kennedy Drive and Warnbro Sound Avenue, andĀ Port Kennedy Drive between Bakewell Drive and Ennis Avenue.

Motorists have been told to avoid the area.
