A man has found his wife dead in the front yard of their Darwin home after she was allegedly killed while he was at work.

Another man has been arrested and is under police guard at a Northern Territory hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Morrissey says police were called to the couple’s Leanyer home about 5.30pm on Thursday.

“The information received was that a 45-year-old male had returned home from work and found his 39-year-old wife deceased at the front of the property” he told reporters in Friday.

“His wife appeared to have multiple injuries caused by a sharp-edged type weapon.

“We’re in contact with the husband and he’s obviously distraught.”

Police are treating the death as a homicide and believe the incident happened about 2.30pm on Thursday.

Detectives and tactical response group officers later arrested a 56-year-old manĀ at his home in Rosebery but no charges have been laid.

Det Snr Sgt Morrissey said police negotiated with the man before he agreed to come out of the house about 2am on Friday.

“The male was suffering injuries that had been received prior to police attendance and was conveyed to the Royal Darwin Hospital,” he said.

“He’s still in hospital and police are yet to be able to speak to him.”

The man in custody and woman were known to each other but not related.

Investigations continue.
