A woman could lose both arms after being mauled by a dog in the Northern Territory.

Emergency services were called to a home in Palmerston, about 20km south of Darwin, about 2am on Sunday, where a 60-year-old woman had significant injuries.

“This is a terrible incident and a woman has suffered life-altering injuries,” police commander Sachin Sharma said on Monday.

The woman was taken Royal Darwin Hospital.

“We understand that the lady has undergone surgery and is in a critical condition,” a St John Ambulance spokeswoman said.

An “aggressive” dog at the house was later surrendered to council rangers.

A second dog on the property that was showing signs of aggression was also seized.

“At this stage we have not charged anybody,” Commander Sharma said.

“We implore all dog owners to make sure their animals are properly trained, controlled and restrained.”
