A Northern Territory man has been charged with murder after he allegedly bashed and stabbed a relative to death at a family meeting about a funeral.

The 28-year-old man was arrested shortly after the alleged attack, which happened at a Darwin home about 5.40pm on Tuesday.

He’s since been charged with murder and will appear in Darwin Local Court on Thursday, NT police say.

His alleged victim, aged 42, was found in a driveway at a home in the suburb of Malak after the younger man had fled to a nearby residence.

Paramedics and police tried to revive the man but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

“His injuries included a number of blunt force injuries,” Detective Senior Sergeant Jak Evans previously told reporters.

“He’d been hit with an object and he’d also been stabbed once in the abdomen.”

The men were known to each other and from the same Aboriginal community.

“They were unfortunately and very sadly in town discussing funeral arrangements for an extended family member,” Det Sen Sgt Evans said.

“An argument ensued and unfortunately a man is deceased.”

Family members intervened to stop the attack.

“Unfortunately, it was too late,” Det Sen Sgt Evans said.

“It was definitely an emotional time, all funerals are.

“Now they have to organise a second one.”

The 28-year-old man has also been charged with breaching bail.
