A Northern Territory woman has died after she was struck by three cars on a dimly lit section of the Stuart Highway near Darwin.

Two of the three drivers failed roadside drug tests and were arrested, NT Police say.

The accident happened about 7.30pm on Wednesday, with police describing the woman as a middle-aged pedestrian. She’s yet to be identified.

“The woman was struck by several vehicles in quick succession on a dimly lit section of the road,” Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said in a statement on Thursday.

All three drivers stopped and waited for police.

A 24-year-old woman allegedly tested positive for cannabis use and was immediately suspended from driving for 24 hours.

She was released from custody pending further investigation.

No details were available for the other driver who failed the roadside drug test.

Major crash detectives are appealing for witnesses to the accident to come forward.

The Stuart Highway south of Palmerston was closed for most of the night and reopened at 4am.

Meanwhile, police are appealing for witnesses after a man was injured in an alleged hit and run incident in Darwin on Wednesday.

A man was struck by a vehicle about 9.20pm in the suburb of Karama.

He was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say CCTV footage shows several cars drove past the man after he was injured.
