The driver of a Mazda 3 hatch has been urged to hand themselves in after an Sydney officer was mowed down while attempting to stop them for speeding.

The senior constable was forced to jump for his life on Tuesday night when the driver refused to stop after being clocked travelling at 121 km/h in a 70 zone in Sydney’s west.

Police said the hit-and-run accident showed callous disregard for the officer’s life and he was lucky to escape with just leg injuries.

CCTV footage shows the officer, wearing a reflective vest and holding a “Stop Police” sign along with a torch, signalling the driver to stop on Roberts Road on Greenacre.

But instead the driver speeds up to overtake a taxi, collecting the officer in the process.

It is unclear if the driver saw the officer but they would have known they had struck someone, a police spokeswoman said.

She said the dark blue hatchback would also be damaged.
