A woman has been fatally stabbed on a road in Darwin’s northern suburbs in broad daylight, with the alleged offender pedalling off on a bicycle.
The woman, aged in her 30s, was found on Freshwater Road in Jingili on Tuesday about 10am, Northern Territory police say.
She suffered multiple stab wounds, Detective Acting-Superintendent Mark Malogorski said.
Bystanders attempted to help the woman after the attack.
“It’s a tragedy … for the whole community of the Northern Territory,” he told reporters.
A 34-year-old man has been taken into custody.
“The male was arrested a short time after the incident in the Jingili area,” Det Supt Malogorski said.
“He did leave the area on a bike.
“At this stage, it’s being treated as a homicide.
“It’s unclear at this stage exactly what the weapon was.”
The woman and the man were believed to have lived together, he said.
