Queensland police are warning that lengthy delays are likely when the state’s COVID-19 borders restrictions are relaxed for regional NSW.

The current rules are set to tumble from 1am AEST on Tuesday, with an extra three million people eligible to enter the Sunshine State.

Chief Superintendent Mark Wheeler says it won’t just be holidaymakers and business travellers queuing to cross the border but also families reuniting.

“There are people who for months and months haven’t been able to visit Queensland and see relatives and friends, so we’d be expecting big volumes,” he told reporters.

“We’ve got to anticipate that over the coming days and weeks people will want to visit Queensland, particularly those people who have been unable to do so for such a long period of time.”

He urged people to have their border declaration passes ready and remain patient if there are delays.

Meanwhile, two men have been arrested at a Queensland NSW border checkpoint after eight kilos of cocaine was allegedly found in their car.

Police say the men, aged 26 and 31, were allegedly travelling north on the Pacific Motorway on Friday when they were stopped,

Ecstasy and cannabis was also seized.

The men have been charged with possessing dangerous drugs.

Queensland recorded no new COVID-19 cases on Monday. Three cases remain active.
