Police are searching for a camper who disappeared in a notorious swimming hole known as Devil’s Pool in far north Queensland.
The 37-year-old Brisbane man failed to resurface at Babinda Boulders, near Cairns, while swimming with a mate on Monday evening.
“It’s a tragic loss of life. It’s such a beautiful day and it ends up in tragedy,” Acting Inspector Brett Jenkins told reporters on Tuesday.
“I know it looks inviting but it’s dangerous. There is a history in this area of people going missing in the water.
“The Devil’s Pools are restricted for a reason. People have lost their lives.”
Acting Inspector Jenkins said there were deep undercurrents and “deceiving hollows” in the pool.
A police helicopter, a swift water rescue team and emergency workers started searching for the man after alarm was raised about 8.30pm.
The search was suspended about midnight and recommenced on Tuesday morning.
“We believe he’s still in the water,” Acting Inspector Jenkins said.
“We will search for as long as it takes today and every available resource is here with the divers on the way.”
