Australian military accidents

The crash of a US aircraft off the Queensland coast joins a list of tragic military accidents in Australia or involving Australians.

* Fifteen Special Air Service Regiment soldiers and three aircrew from the Army’s 5th Aviation Regiment are killed when two Australian Black Hawk helicopters collide in June 12 ,1996 during a night live-fire counter-terrorism exercise near Townsville.

* Nine Australian Defence Force personnel are killed in the Sea King “Shark02” crash on the Indonesian island of Nias on April 2, 2005 while on a mercy mission to help survivors of a massive earthquake off the coast of Sumatra. 

* Two men die  in June 1992 when a Black Hawk crashes near the Army aviation school at Oakey, Queensland due to pilot error. The helicopter was carrying six SAS soldiers and four crew members.

* A Black Hawk helicopter crashes while trying to land on HMAS Kanimbla during exercises preparing for evacuation from coup-stricken Fiji on November 29, 2006. Army pilot Captain Mark Bingley and SAS trooper Joshua Porter are killed.
