Accused Snapchat rapist granted bail

A Brisbane man, who allegedly raped an unconscious drunk woman and then posted a recording of the attack on social media, has been granted bail.

July 6, 2020

A Brisbane man allegedly filmed himself sexually assaulting a drunk woman after she passed out, then posted the recording on social media.

The 21-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was charged with rape on Friday after he allegedly sent the video out on messaging app Snapchat.

He is also accused of making a recording in breach of the privacy act and distributing a prohibited recording of the woman, also 21, who was known to him.

“They are very serious charges – it is alleged the defendant has raped the victim while she was unconscious due to intoxication and that has been filmed,” police prosecutor Ben Michelle told Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday.

“He admits to making the film but denies the allegation of rape.”

Mr Michelle opposed the man’s bail application, saying the case was strong and he was possibly facing jail time.

“There was consensual sex beforehand. She is drunk. He is drunk … and has been incredibly stupid … it has had some distribution on Snapchat,” magistrate Noel Nunan said as he agreed to release the man.

The man’s bail conditions include not contacting five witnesses, who are aged between 19 and 21.

He will reappear in the same court on August 10.
