Qld man charged over Brogden cold case

Detectives have charged a man with the murder of a Queensland man last seen near Airlie Beach in 2007.

April 2, 2019

A man has been charged with the murder of north Queensland man Jay Brogden more than a decade ago.

Mr Brogden, 21, was last seen at Cannonvale near Airlie Beach on April 21, 2007 after receiving death threats for his violent treatment of his partner.

A coroner in 2015 ruled he died as a result of foul play and referred the case to homicide detectives.

Police on Tuesday said they had charged a man, 33, for his role in the murder.

That man has been extradited from Sydney for another incident in Airlie Beach in 2009 and had been helping police with their investigation into Mr Brogden’s death.

It follows the arrest of a 32-year-old Coffs Harbour man by NSW Police for other matters on March 26.

He is expected to also be charged with Mr Brogden’s murder when he is eventually extradited to Queensland.

The two men were arrested after a billboard designed to jog memories about the case was erected on the highway at Cannonvale, where Mr Brogden was last seen.

A $250,000 reward is in place for information leading to a conviction.

Police are also promising to provide indemnity for anyone who is not the principal offender.

The 33-year-old man is due to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
