Qld MP to learn fate over harassment claim

A Queensland MP facing expulsion from his party following claims about his conduct towards a teenage girl is expected to learn his fate.

A Queensland MP is expected to learn his fate following allegations about his conduct toward a teenage girl while he was on holiday interstate.

Whitsunday MP Jason Costigan has been suspended from the LNP and expected to be expelled on Friday over the incident.

A second complaint was lodged on Thursday, while he was strenuously denying any bad behaviour with the first teen, an 18 year old woman, he had met while visiting her relatives.

“It’s utter crap. I was invited to the family home … nothing bad happened, nothing sinister,” he told reporters on Thursday.

Little is known about the actual claims made by the 18-year-old’s mother to the LNP but after reading them, party leader Deb Frecklington said the MP doesn’t have the morals to be a member.

“As a mum of three girls I can tell you, it made my skin crawl … the allegation makes me feel sick,” she told reporters.

Mr Costigan is suspended from the LNP following a hearing by the party’s disputes committee, who found the MP’s conduct breached the party’s constitution and recommended his expulsion.

He is expected to be expelled when the party’s executive meets on Friday.

The complaint has been referred to police in another state.

Mr Costigan has spoken with a defamation lawyer and says he will be pursuing the matter “like there’s no tomorrow.”

The LNP says the second complaint involved a 20-year-old woman, who was 19 at the time of her interaction with the MP.

The LNP is understood to be expecting more complaints.
