The body of a Queensland man who went missing in the Brisbane River on an outing with friends has been found.

Matt Jarvis, 34, disappeared in the river near the bottom of the Kangaroo Point cliffs about 7.40pm on Saturday.

No one saw him enter the water, they just heard a splash and him calling out.

He had been socialising and drinking by the river, opposite the Brisbane CBD, with friends minutes before he disappeared.

“He walked off from the group to the river’s edge … they then heard a rustling in the trees and a splash and called out, ‘I think that’s Matt’,” a police spokeswoman told AAP on Sunday.

Mr Javis’ friends ran to the water’s edge at the popular barbecue spot, where they saw him struggling.

Three of the group dived in to try and reach him, but could not help him.

“Other witnesses at the scene have (also) said they observed a man in the water before he went under and was not seen again,” she said.

A search operation throughout Saturday and Sunday using divers, boats and helicopters failed to find Mr Jarvis.

Police found his body in the river at 9.45am on Monday.
