Qld govt stops Brisbane pub demolition

The Queensland government has pre-empted the demolition of a historic Brisbane pub destroyed by a suspicious fire by issuing a stop-work order.

September 8, 2018

The Queensland government has issued a Stop Order under the Heritage Act to pre-empt any plans to demolish a historic Brisbane pub destroyed by a suspicious fire.

The late-night blaze broke out in the Broadway Hotel in Woolloongabba seven days ago.

It was the third blaze at the heritage site, which was the subject of a $260 million development application, in the past eight years.

Treasurer Jackie Trad says the community is sick of seeing Queensland’s heritage buildings destroyed.

“I’m calling on Brisbane City Council to not approve any development on this site that doesn’t include the restoration and preservation of the Broadway Hotel,” she said in a statement on Saturday.

The hotel was built in the late 1880s and had been vacant for several years.

It was placed on the Queensland Heritage Register in 1992.

The Stop Order does not prevent the hotel’s owner from carrying out work to prevent any further deterioration of the site.
