Two men have been charged with attempted murder and a Queensland police officer is in hospital after a stolen car was allegedly used to deliberately run him down.

The senior constable remains in a serious but stable condition at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, police said on Monday.

A 26 and 35-year-old Brighton men were charged with one count each of attempted murder and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

The officer was hit and carried for 30 metres on the bonnet of the red BMW when he approached the car after noticing it had home-made licence plates at Chermside in Brisbane’s north at around 12.30am.

The officer suffered head injuries when he was eventually flung from the car on Bouchard Street.

The two men fled and dumped the car on Nystrom Street but were later arrested.

Police say the vehicle was stolen from the driveway of a Wilston home last week.

The 35-year-old man will appear at the Pine Rivers Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

The 26-year-old man will reappear at the same court on October 31.
