A search has been called off for a man thought to be missing after a woman’s body was found on a beach in Sydney’s eastern suburbs.
Detectives confirmed on Friday afternoon the man was not missing after concerns were raised following the discovery of a woman’s body in the morning.
Fears a man was missing were sparked when male and female clothing was found near the woman’s body at the northern end of Maroubra Beach.
Two rescue helicopters began searching the water while police and lifeguards scoured nearby land. A sea search was not possible due to the hazardous surf.
The air and land search failed to find a man and shortly after 1.30pm detectives confirmed the male clothes was not linked to the woman’s body.
Her death is not being treated as suspicious and she is yet to be formally identified.
Maroubra Beach remains closed due to the surf conditions.
