Emergency services are trying to retrieve the body of a man who drowned after he was swept out to sea at a notorious northern NSW beach.

Police marine divers and surf lifesavers on jetskis resumed the recovery operation at Fingal Head near Tweed Heads at 7am on Thursday, police told AAP.

Rescuers had suspended the operation on Wednesday due to dangerous surf conditions.

The man, believed to be in his 20s, was last seen alive at 3.10pm about 50m from the beach, where three people have died in the past two years.

Fingal Head beach has a reputation for dangerous conditions and locals say water searches are not uncommon.

“When you hear the helicopter stationary and in one spot for a long time your alarm bells go off,” one local told Nine Network.

“It strikes your belly because you’re thinking of who it is and their family.”
