NSW govt gives $100 per child for sport

NSW families can apply for a $100 voucher per school-age child to help with the cost of out-of-school sports and recreation activities.

January 31, 2018

NSW school kids are being encouraged to get “out in the sun” and be more active with the state government offering $100 vouchers to help offset the high cost of organised sport.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian says the new Active Kids vouchers will encourage thousands of children and their parents to become happier and healthier.

“We’re doing everything we can to encourage kids to have an active, to have great outdoor lifestyle playing sports and other activities,” she told reporters in Sydney on Wednesday.

The voucher will also help reduce the cost of living pressures for families, the premier said.

“For a lot of families, especially out here in Penrith, they do budget for what their kids can participate in,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“Hopefully this $100 voucher per child will help.”

The program – announced in last year’s budget – commences from Wednesday.

Sports Minister Stuart Ayres says the vouchers will help families deal with the high cost of organised sport.

“This is about getting more people out on the sporting ground, out in the sun, out on the grass and being active healthy kids right across NSW,” Mr Ayres said.

“Participating in sport is expensive. So this is an opportunity the NSW government is giving every parent … to put $100 back in your pocket”.

Families can apply online with Service NSW to receive the voucher for use with an approved sport or physical activity club or organisation.
