Northern Territory police say they have not ruled out foul play after a woman died in a Darwin bush camp.

Police investigating a woman’s death in a Darwin bush camp say they have not ruled out foul play.

The woman died about 12.30am on Monday in scrubland in the northern suburb of Karama on the city’s fringe.

“After midnight last night a member of the public got waved down by a rough sleeper advising them that a 47-year-old female was unconscious,” Northern Territory Acting Commissioner Michael Murphy said.

“Police and (paramedics) responded. Sadly she passed away at the scene.”

Commissioner Murphy said detectives continued to investigate how the woman died.

Earlier, Detective Senior Sergeant Jackson Evans said police were treating the death as suspicious until it is determined otherwise.

“It is too early in the investigation to say whether or not there was any foul play involved,” he said.

The Darwin area recorded significant rainfall on Sunday afternoon, with between 15 and 54mm of rain in the 24 hours to 9am on Monday.
