Man charged over fatal Sydney hit-and-run

Police hope the family of a 19-year-old killed in a fatal hit-and-run on Sunday will have “some closure” following the alleged driver’s arrest.

Police hope there’ll be “some closure” for the family of a 19-year-old woman killed in a hit-and-run in Sydney’s west following the arrest of a 35-year-old driver.

Natasha Gadd was hit by a vehicle on Milperra’s Henry Lawson Drive as she walked home with friends early on Sunday morning.

The teenager died on the roadside while the driver fled and then allegedly drove back to the crash site about 10 minutes later.

On Monday NSW Police released CCTV footage of a white ute with a refrigeration unit in the rear tray driving near the crash site 11 minutes after Ms Gadd was struck.

A rear view mirror that broke off the vehicle was recovered from the scene by police.

Her friends and police spent three days urging the “cowardly” driver to come forward.

On Tuesday night police made the breakthrough, arresting and charging a 35-year-old suspended driver from Old Guildford over the incident.

Officers seized a white ute at a factory in St Peters and it is undergoing forensic examination.

The 35-year-old man is due to face Fairfield Local Court on Wednesday.

“We hope this provides some closure … and although it won’t bring their daughter back … hopefully it will provide some closure for the family,” Detective Inspector Katie Orr told reporters on Wednesday.

“If you do hit someone, you are obliged to stop and you are obliged to render assistance,” Insp Orr said.

Ms Gadd’s mother Charmain struggled to comprehend how the driver could have fled the scene.

“He’s a coward – he or she, whoever it was,” she told the Nine Network on Sunday.

“My baby’s never coming home.”
