City of Sydney launches ‘yes’ campaign

Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore has launched the council’s campaign in support of same-sex marriage.

Sydney residents can expect an invitation to vote ‘yes’ in support of same-sex marriage to land in their letterboxes within days.

The City of Sydney is throwing its support behind marriage equality as millions of Australians cast their votes in a voluntary postal survey.

“This is something where we’re supporting our community,” Lord Mayor Clover Moore told reporters on Tuesday.

“We have a larger number of people who are GLBTI living in our city than any other area – than the whole of Australia.”

Ms Moore urged Sydneysiders and the million visitors to the city each day to back same-sex marriage.

Gay rights campaigner Tiernan Brady, who was among those at the Martin Place launch, said the debate boiled down to whether all Australians should be treated fairly and equally under the law.

“This is about people we know who just want to get on with their lives and it won’t cost anyone anything to treat them equally,” he told AAP.

About 30,000 people marched through Sydney earlier this month in support of same-sex marriage, while skywriters scrawled ‘vote no’ above the harbourside city at the weekend.
