A man has been charged with murder after a “horrific and extremely violent” attack left a man lying in a Brisbane street with head, neck and chest injuries.

The 40-year-old Beenleigh man was taken into custody by police on Friday when he approached officers at the Woodridge crime scene.

It followed the discovery of a 50-year-old man with multiple life-threatening injuries at the intersection of Defiance Road and North Road about 5am.

A member of the public reported the alleged attack.

Paramedics fought to save the man’s life on the roadside but he later died at Princess Alexandra Hospital, police say.

Detective Inspector Chris Knight said the men had a “random connection” that escalated very quickly.

He described the victim’s injuries as “extremely violent”.

“They, unfortunately, crossed paths and the devastating outcome eventuated,” he said.

“It’s a horrible incident. There’s nothing to suggest this is anything other than a random assault, which of course is very concerning.”

He refused to comment if weapons were used.

Police do not believe drugs or alcohol were factors.

The man has been charged with one count of murder and is due to appear at the Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Monday.
