A woman has allegedly been stabbed in the face by a man who stopped by her far north Queensland home asking for water and medicine.

The woman, 25, came to her front verandah at Lockhart River about 9.30pm on Tuesday after the man, 26, allegedly approached her asking for help.

Police say the man punched and stabbed the woman in her face, stomach, arms and legs after she handed him the water.

A neighbour, 49, attempted to intervene but the man allegedly assaulted her as well before running off, a spokeswoman said in a statement on Wednesday.

The woman was flown to Cairns Hospital suffering serious but not life-threatening wounds.

Police arrested the man about 10am on Wednesday and charged him with grievous bodily harm and common assault.

He was denied police bail and is due to appear in Cairns Magistrates Court later on Wednesday.
