JobKeeper cuts will hit Qld families hard

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has warned that Queensland families will be impacted by federal cuts to the JobKeeper wage subsidy.

Queensland’s premier has warned families will bear the brunt of federal JobKeeper wage subsidy cuts, saying many are relying on it to get through the COVID-19 economic crisis.

“We’re very concerned,” Annastacia Palaszczuk told reporters on Monday.

“This has kept a lot of people gaining some income whilst they’re going through some very tough times

“As that comes off it’s going to have a big impact on families.”

JobKeeper payments will be reduced from $1500 a fortnight to $1200 for full-time workers and to $750 for part-time workers from Monday.

Treasurer Cameron Dick said the federal government needs to tread carefully with JobKeeper.

“We know it’s sustaining families, sustaining individuals and has made a real difference to people’s lives during the worst economic downturn since the great depression,” he said.

“They need to be extremely cautious with the impacts.”

Mr Dick warned the cuts could also negatively affect unemployment levels.

He urged further investment to stimulate the economy.
