Throat cut in NSW angle grinder accident

A Sydney man is in an induced coma after his throat was cut in an angle grinder accident.

August 24, 2017

A 70-year-old man is in hospital after his wind pipe was cut when an angle grinder “exploded” in western Sydney.

Paramedics said the man received deep cuts to his throat after an angle grinder blade disintegrated while he was fixing a fence in North St Marys on Thursday morning.

The man’s son said his father was an experienced handyman who had been working on the back fence of his home when the accident happened.

“The grinder exploded,” he told AAP.

CareFlight’s specialist doctor and paramedic treated the man at the scene before he was placed in an induced coma and intubated to manage his breathing.

He was taken to Westmead Hospital by road for surgery and remains in a stable condition.

A CareFlight spokesman said the man was lucky the grinder blade hadn’t pierced any further into his neck or “it would have been a worse outcome”.

SafeWork NSW is investigating.
