Four people have died in the Gold Coast hinterland after two cars collided in wet conditions.

The accident happened just before 1pm on Saturday at Advancetown, about 20 kilometres inland from Surfers Paradise.

“On our arrival, we found four patients in traumatic cardiac arrest and one patent with minor injuries,” Queensland Ambulance Service paramedic Jay Nevins told reporters at the scene.

“We had some very experienced paramedics on scene today. It was a tragic scene.”

Police say they believe the driver of a car carrying three passengers lost control and smashed into a ute coming from the other direction on Nerang Murwillumbah Road.

The driver of the utility, a man in his 20s, was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital with minor injuries, Mr Nevins said.

A team of eight paramedics tried to resuscitate the four people from the other vehicle but were unable to revive them.

They were declared deceased at the scene.

“Nerang Murwillumbah Road is known for road traffic collisions,” Mr Nevins said.

The semi-rural and hilly area has received significant rainfall for the past 12 hours.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.
