High-rise bandit leaps from tower balcony

Police have nabbed a death-defying bandit who scaled high-rise buildings and robbed 40 apartments in a two-month crime spree on the Gold and Sunshine coasts.

A high-rise bandit who can climb like Spider-Man has hurled himself over a balcony more than 20 storeys up, after offering a quick apology to the person he was robbing.

Queensland police ended the bandit’s audacious two-month crime spree on the weekend, after he allegedly robbed 40 high-rise units on the Gold and Sunshine coasts.

One victim who interrupted the 32-year-old was left stunned when the burglar escaped by hurling himself over a balcony more than 20 storeys off the ground.

“He said to the person ‘sorry’ and ran and jumped over the balcony and that was about 23 or 24 storeys up,” Detective Acting Sergeant Matt Damro told The Gold Coast Bulletin.

“They actually saw him go over. Whether he’s just grabbing onto the railing and dropping onto the next one and grabbing it, we’re not sure. If you missed it, you’re in trouble.”

Police initially believed the bandit must have been using a master key to get into the units, given how high they were off the ground.

Detectives finally tracked him to a Miami property, where he was arrested on the weekend.

He’s facing 49 counts of burglary, 16 counts of fraud, and other charges after allegedly making off with cash and wallets, and using stolen cards to do a spot of shopping.

He will appear in Southport Magistrates Court on Monday.
