Qld cold case murder accused faces court

A second man has appeared in court over the 2007 murder of 21-year-old Jay Brogden near Airlie Beach in Queensland’s north.

September 27, 2019

A second suspect has faced a Queensland court charged with the murder of a man in the state’s north more than a decade ago.

Gavin Philip Parnell, 33, appeared briefly in Brisbane Magistrate’s Court on Friday charged with murdering 21-year-old Jay Brogden.

Mr Brogden was last seen near Airlie Beach on April 21, 2007, after receiving death threats over the violent treatment of his partner.

His body has never been found.

A coroner ruled in 2015 that he died as a result of foul play and referred the case to homicide detectives.

In April, Braddon Peter Charles Butler, 33, was charged with Mr Brogden’s murder after being extradited from Sydney.

Parnell was extradited from Coffs Harbour in NSW on Thursday.

The court heard he is also facing one robbery and two stealing charges, which allegedly occurred in 2008 and 2017 respectively.

He was remanded in custody to appear in Mackay Magistrate’s Court on November 7.
