Missing Qld wife lived in fear: court

A Gold Coast mother lived in fear for her life as she pursued a divorce from the husband now accused of her murder, a court has been told.

August 23, 2019

A Gold Coast woman allegedly murdered by her husband told her brother she feared something big was about to happen to her in weeks leading up to her disappearance, a court has heard.

Novy Chardon, 34, went missing on February 6, 2013, amid a divorce dispute with her husband John William Chardon, 71.

Her body has never been found and more than six years later Chardon is fighting a murder a charge in the Brisbane Supreme Court.

Ms Chardon’s younger brother, Yonki Mansur, says he used to speak to his sister about twice a week from Indonesia.

He said his sister had become increasingly concerned about her safety.

“John was no longer being faithful to Novy because he had another woman,” he said via video link from Indonesia.

“(She was) concerned about her life.”

Mr Mansur said Chardon had begun making threats to kill her and was refusing to a divide their joint property fairly as they negotiated their divorce using lawyers.

“Novy knew John had a pistol,” he said.

“She had a feeling that something big was going to happen to her … John had started to act violently.”

The court has previously heard the pair married a month after meeting in 2000 and had two children together.

Prosecutor Mark Green says after Ms Chardon disappeared, a concerned friend went to the couple’s Upper Coomera home where she was propositioned by Chardon.

She also noticed the carpet in Mrs Chardon’s bedroom was wet underfoot and that a runner was missing.

Chardon said he had cleaned the carpet that morning.

The trial continues on Friday.
